Navigating the School System and Building Relationships with Professionals

Ella & Sara Thompson

Navigating the school system and building relationships with professionals By,  Julie Thompson When our twin girls with Down Syndrome entered the school system, we were living in Connecticut where there seemed to be a distinct separation between school professionals and parents.  Most parents that we knew went to meetings with an advocate and I was advised that I should do that to ensure our rights were met.  Additionally it was recommended that we always tape record our team meetings so we would have “evidence” of what was promised.  I never did this, as it felt like it showed of lack […]

Our Solutions for Success conference was a huge success! Our only regret was that more of our members didn’t participate. But for those who did, we heard many of them state how practical and useful the advice they received was… and that was the goal! To provide extremely practical and useful information that parents and teacher could begin to implement right away!

Jamie’s Story

This is a freelance narrative by Helen Cooper. In May, 2005, my beautiful son Jamie, was born. We had waited a long time to have him, some six years after our first child, Maddie, was born. My first pregnancy had been marked by many health issues, including gestational diabetes and high blood pressure. Maddie was preterm, and when she was born, we weren’t able to take her home. Her low birth weight meant she had to be hospitalized for 20 days and we struggled to get her weight up; sometimes it seemed like she would lose the battle but finally, she […]

Walk With Angels 2014 a HUGE success!

Walk With Angels 2014 was a huge success, and we far surpassed our fundraising goal of $50,000. (I guess next year we’ll have to set that goal a bit higher!) WWA 2014 raised $65,447 towards United Angels Foundation’s programs. 100% of these funds will be used to support parents and families of children with special needs here in Utah. We want to give a big shout-out to all members and volunteers who helped with 2014’s Walk With Angels. Without your help, we would not have been able to pull it all off. Here is a list of key volunteers; make […]

Deseret News: iPads 4 Angels hopes to enrich special needs education throughout Utah

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865583801/iPads-4-Angels-hopes-to-enrich-special-needs-education-throughout-Utah.html?pg=all OREM — When a mother noticed her special needs child became more educationally engaged after getting an iPad for Christmas, the idea to enhance special needs education with technology sparked a statewide movement. Mellanie Taylor, whose 14-year-old daughter Alexia is diagnosed with Down syndrome, brought her idea to her fellow members of the United Angels Foundation, a Utah-based, nonprofit support group for parents of children with disabilities. “These kids who have special needs have the same dreams and desires as their peers,” the West Jordan mother said. “They need help, and we want to give them the most opportunities […]
