Parent Directed Reading Instruction for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities
For many years, the most common way of teaching reading skills to individuals with significant disabilities was to teach memorizing sight words. Recent studies have demonstrated that children with intellectual and developmental disabilities can learn more complex reading skills such as learning to read new words they encounter in unfamiliar text. This presentation will provide an example of some research we have been doing on parent directed instruction for a variety of reading skills. In addition we will also present strategies for managing challenging behaviors such as noncompliance during reading instruction.
